Earlier this fall, members of the FMI Food Protection Committee Produce Safety Workgroup visited four onion farms and packing sheds across Colorado and Washington State to strengthen our understanding of food safety practices in bulk onion production. Attendees were able to see the complete product flow, including growing, harvesting, storage, and packing operations. Additionally, our hosts highlighted potential food safety risks in onion production and current industry practices used to manage and mitigate them. The tour emphasized the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in developing robust food safety systems across the produce industry.
