FMI Welcomes FDA Approval of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine

Arlington, VA – Today, FMI – The Food Industry Association President and CEO Leslie G. Sarasin issued the following statement applauding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) first approval of a COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 16 years and older.

“FMI is pleased with FDA’s announcement today providing full approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Supermarket pharmacies serve as a health and well-being destination for countless Americans and have played a critical role in administering COVID-19 vaccines throughout the pandemic. According to FMI’s 2021 Retailer Contributions to Health and Well-being report, 81% of FMI member companies with pharmacy operations administer COVID-19 vaccines.

“FDA’s approval today strengthens the ability of supermarket pharmacies to offer vaccines to their customers. With flu season approaching and the Delta variant continuing to be a significant public health concern, Americans will be looking to their local supermarket pharmacies to safeguard the health of their families.

“In conjunction with FDA’s approval of the Pfizer vaccine, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recently updated guidance allowing for the dual administration of COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines – such as the flu shot – during the same visit makes it that much easier for consumers to receive immunizations at the same location where they already purchase food and other essentials.”
