Food Retail Industry Vows to Complete Menu Labeling Implementation Once and For All

FMI Urges FDA to Address Flexibility, Certainty and Enforcement Protections

ARLINGTON, VA – Food Marketing Institute (FMI) President and CEO Leslie G. Sarasin released the following statement today upon receiving supplemental draft guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the chain restaurant menu labeling rule.

Sarasin said, “When FDA opened a comment period in May to review potential changes to the chain restaurant menu labeling rule itself, we participated in this process by submitting 32 pages of substantive comments that would help reduce the regulatory burden and increase flexibility in how food retailers provide meaningful nutrition information to their customers.

“FMI appreciates the attempts by Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and FDA to address some of these concerns within the limits of guidance, and we will continue to work with Congress and FDA to complete the actions needed to provide the intended flexibility, certainty and enforcement protections that would allow food retailers and restaurants the confidence to fulfill our shared commitment to complete implementation once and for all."
