Boyd George Receives 2003 Woodard Award for Excellence in Public Affairs

BOCA RATON, FL — January 13, 2003 — Recognizing his outstanding contributions in shaping public policy, legislation and regulation at the national and grassroots levels, Boyd George, chairman and CEO, Alex Lee Inc., received the 2003 Glen P. Woodard, Jr., Award from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI). The award was presented during the 2003 FMI Midwinter Executive Conference in Boca Raton, FL.

In presenting the award, FMI Chairman Ron Pearson said, “Boyd’s commitment to the industry’s full agenda of issues and sense of duty to represent our industry before the government is unsurpassed.”

During his career, Boyd George has worked to repeal the ergonomics regulations in 2001 and furnished hard-dollar estimates of the cost for a warehouse to comply with the rule. Two years ago, he helped found a now thriving political action committee (PAC), which is supported by contributions from 170 company executives.

Mr. George participates in political campaigns and has served the industry on many levels as chairman of the National-American Wholesale Grocers Association, chairman of the Government Relations Committee at NAWGA, and is an active member of FMI’s Board-level Public Affairs Committee.

Mike Wright, chairman of SUPERVALU Inc., praised George’s work saying, “He epitomizes how family-owned companies can shape government policy.”
