SpartanNash Foundation

Company : SpartanNash
Program category : Food Insecurity

Origins:

Last year, the SpartanNash Foundation achieved its most successful fundraiser to date, raising nearly $480,000 on behalf of local food pantry partners across the Midwest. The fundraiser, which ran Oct. 25 to Nov. 27, raised funds through generous donations from store guests and Associates at participating SpartanNash-operated retail stores, including Family Fare®, Martin's Super Markets, D&W® Fresh Market and fuel centers. SpartanNash stores work with the food pantry in their community to raise participation and showcase the need for local participation. The SpartanNash Foundation pledged an additional $85,000 to food pantries located near SpartanNash distribution centers, bringing the total donation to $565,000. This donation equates to an estimated 204,000 meals for families across the Midwest. The fundraiser was conducted both in-store and online, allowing a wide range of participants to contribute to the cause. The success of the fundraiser highlighted the generosity of the community and the commitment of the SpartanNash Foundation to support local food pantries.

Contribution:

Store guests and Associates had the opportunity to contribute various dollar amounts while checking out, both in-store and online. These donations directly benefited food pantries in Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The SpartanNash Foundation's additional pledge of $85,000 further supports food pantries located near SpartanNash distribution centers. This combined effort from store guests, Associates, and the SpartanNash Foundation demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing food insecurity. Associates actively promoted the fundraiser, encouraging guests to donate and highlighting the importance of supporting local food pantries. The widespread participation across multiple states showcases the collective effort to support families in need and ensure they have access to meals.

Objectives:

The SpartanNash Foundation is dedicated to making a positive impact in the communities it serves. Over the past year, the Foundation organized five in-store fundraisers, each aimed at supporting a variety of nonprofit partners. These partners include the American Red Cross, which provides emergency assistance and disaster relief; Special Olympics, which offers sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities; Hero Partners, which supports veterans and active-duty military personnel; Junior Achievement, which focuses on youth education and financial literacy; and local Food Pantries, which help combat hunger and food insecurity. Through these fundraisers, the SpartanNash Foundation not only raised essential funds but also increased awareness about the critical work these organizations do. By fostering community engagement, the Foundation strives to create a lasting, positive impact on the lives of those in need. This commitment to philanthropy and community support is at the heart of the SpartanNash Foundation's mission.

Impact:

Since 2015, the SpartanNash Foundation's annual in-store fundraisers have raised nearly $3 million to support food pantry partners, providing the equivalent of over one million meals for people in the communities SpartanNash serves. The success of the program is measured by the total funds raised, the number of meals provided, and the positive impact on food pantries and the families they serve. The consistent support from store guests and Associates, along with the Foundation's contributions, has made a significant difference in addressing food insecurity across the country. The program's impact is evident in the increased capacity of food pantries to serve families in need and the improved access to nutritious meals. The fundraiser's success also highlights the importance of community involvement and the power of collective efforts to make a positive change. By continuing to support local food pantries, the SpartanNash Foundation aims to sustain and expand its impact, ensuring that more families have access to meals and reducing food insecurity in the communities it serves.

Support Statement:

"We're incredibly grateful for the SpartanNash Foundation and their support for our work here in West Michigan. Their fundraiser not only provides key funding to sustain our food access efforts that support over 10,000 financially struggling neighbors each year, but also helps broaden our community of support by sharing about our programs," said Scott Rumpsa, Chief Executive Officer of Community Action House. "Over the years, our local SpartanNash retailers have been incredible partners, working together to find new creative ways to help us build a stronger, healthier community – redirecting distressed product to get good food to families who need it most and financially supporting our efforts to further ensure that all of our neighbors have what they need to thrive."
