101 Million Meals

Company : GIANT EAGLE
Program category : Food Insecurity

Origins:

Amid the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Giant Eagle made a bold pledge: to donate 80 million meals to families in need by 2025. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of Giant Eagle Team Members and the incredible generosity of customers, the organization not only met this ambitious goal but exceeded it, reaching an astounding 101 million meals donated across all Giant Eagle and GetGo locations. This achievement embodies the company’s commitment to ‘Live Our Purpose’ and its core value of ‘Do Right,’ not just through its business practices, but as integral members of the communities they serve.

Contribution:

Giant Eagle holds seasonal register campaigns, prompting customers to consider making a monetary donation when checking out. Giant Eagle also partners with hundreds of local community partners and pantries on food rescue programs, taking edible food that would otherwise go to waste (e.g., cosmetically imperfect food, past sell-by date, etc.) and redistributing it to those in need.

Objectives:

To lean into the company’s unwavering commitment to feed and sustain our neighborhoods. As a mission partner of Feeding America, Giant Eagle shares a common vision to help inspire its customers and Team Members to join the movement to end hunger.

Impact:

In fiscal year 2025 (FY25) alone, Giant Eagle donated the equivalent of over 6.9 million meals to our local food bank partners solely through its food rescue efforts. This is an important portion of the more than 24 million meals contributed to communities in total in FY25, made up of the collective efforts of food donation practices and monetary gifts generously donated at registers. The recently completed annual spring register campaign in coordination with Feeding America hit a record high in 2025, raising the equivalent of over 8 million meals alone.

Quote:

“When we set our ambitious goal in 2021, we knew that the spirit and dedication of our Team Members, customers and partners would generate the momentum needed to make a meaningful impact, but we could not have imagined surpassing 100 million meals. We are honored to have the opportunity to play our part in supporting our communities, and we are greatly appreciative of the collaboration from our food bank and food rescue partners.”

– Dan Magrish, senior director of community giving, partnerships and sustainability, Giant Eagle
